Patches That Have to Be Right
Most custom patch orders have some flexibility. A streetwear brand can adjust the color, a sports team can tweak the mascot, a school can approve a simplified design. First responder patches are different. When you’re ordering patches for a police department, fire station, military unit, or EMS team, the design has to be exactly right. The insignia, colors, shape, and text are not suggestions — they’re requirements.

Police Department Patches
Police department patches are one of the most specification-driven categories in custom embroidery. Every element matters: the shield or badge shape, the department seal, the jurisdiction text, the color scheme. These patches represent the department’s official identity and are worn on uniforms that go through repeated industrial washing.
Standard Specifications
- Shape: Shield or badge shape is most common. Some departments use circular or custom silhouette patches. The shape is department-defined — we reproduce it exactly.
- Size: Shoulder patches typically run 3–4 inches (height). Chest badge patches vary by department standard. We match your existing patch size or produce to your specification.
- Material: Embroidered, always. Police patches need to survive industrial washing at high heat with commercial detergent — only embroidered thread holds up to these conditions reliably.
- Backing: Sew-on for uniform patches. Never iron-on for official department use — iron-on adhesive does not survive repeated industrial laundering.
- Thread: Colorfast, pre-washed thread. Colors won’t bleed or fade even under industrial wash conditions. Gold and silver metallic thread available for accent work.
Design Accuracy
We digitize from your existing patch, your department seal, or official artwork. If you have a current patch and want an exact reproduction, send us a high-resolution scan or photo — we’ll match it precisely. If you’re designing a new patch for a new department or unit, we’ll work from your brief and provide a digital mockup for approval before production.
Ordering for Departments

Fire Department Patches
Fire department patches carry deep tradition. The Maltese cross, the Florian cross, the departmental shield — these shapes have specific meaning in fire culture and need to be reproduced with care and accuracy. Fire patches also face some of the harshest washing conditions of any uniform application.
Standard Specifications
- Shape: Maltese cross, Florian cross, shield, or circular. Department-defined. We reproduce the exact shape from your artwork or existing patch.
- Size: Shoulder patches typically 3.5–4.5 inches. Back patches for station wear can run larger — 6–10 inches for station name and insignia.
- Material: Embroidered for uniform patches. Industrial wash requirements are even stricter than standard police applications — station gear gets washed frequently at high heat. Our embroidered patches are rated for 50+ industrial wash cycles without color loss or structural failure.
- Backing: Sew-on only for uniform and station wear. Velcro for gear bags, helmets, and interchangeable applications.
- Special considerations: Reflective thread available for high-visibility applications. Metallic gold and silver thread for traditional fire department insignia work.
Station and Unit Patches
Beyond uniform patches, fire departments often need station patches, unit patches, special event patches, and memorial patches. Military Patches
Military patches are the most specification-strict category in custom embroidery. Branch insignia, rank markings, unit patches, and specialty designations all have official standards that must be met exactly. We work from official specifications and produce patches that meet military wear standards.

- Compliance: We produce to official military specifications where applicable. Branch insignia, rank patches, and unit patches are produced to match official standards. Bring your specification document — we’ll match it.
- Size: Varies by branch and application. Army shoulder sleeve insignia are typically 2.5–3 inches. Branch-specific standards apply — we follow them.
- Material: Embroidered for dress and utility uniform applications. PVC increasingly used for tactical gear, bags, and morale patches where weatherproofing matters more than ceremonial appearance.
- Backing: Sew-on for dress uniforms. Velcro (hook side on patch) for MOLLE-compatible gear and tactical applications. Never iron-on for military use.
- Colors: Subdued (muted, tactical) versions available alongside full-color versions. Subdued patches use olive drab, khaki, and black thread instead of bright colors — required for some operational environments.
Morale Patches
Morale patches are a distinct category within military patch culture. They’re unofficial, often humorous or unit-specific, and typically attach via velcro to tactical gear and bags. PVC morale patches are extremely popular — the material is durable, weatherproof, and can reproduce bold designs with vivid colors that embroidery can’t match. Embroidered morale patches are also common for units that prefer the traditional look.
Morale patches have no official specification requirements, so design flexibility is wide open. Units, squadrons, and teams use them to build identity and camaraderie.
EMS and Paramedic Patches
EMS patches follow similar standards to police and fire — official insignia, department colors, accurate text. The Star of Life symbol and caduceus are common design elements. Wash durability requirements are high: EMS uniforms go through frequent laundering under clinical conditions.

- Backing: Sew-on for uniform patches.
- Design: We reproduce from official department artwork or existing patches. Star of Life, department seal, jurisdiction text — all reproduced accurately.
- Size: Typically 3–4 inches for shoulder patches, matching department standard.
Tactical Gear Patches: PVC vs. Embroidered
For non-uniform applications — tactical vests, gear bags, helmets, backpacks — the choice between PVC and embroidered patches depends on the environment and preference.
PVC for tactical gear: Waterproof, weather-resistant, holds color in harsh outdoor conditions. Ideal for gear that gets wet, muddy, or exposed to extreme temperatures. Attaches via velcro to MOLLE webbing. Bold, vivid colors. 2–3 year lifespan under harsh outdoor use.
Embroidered for tactical gear: Traditional appearance, lighter weight, softer profile. Better for applications where the patch sits against the body or needs to be low-profile. Velcro or sew-on attachment. Indefinite lifespan with sew-on backing.
Many units carry both: embroidered patches on the uniform, PVC on the tactical gear. The application determines the material.
Backing Options for First Responder Applications
Getting the backing right is as important as getting the material right. Here’s the definitive guide for first responder applications:
- Sew-on: The standard for all official uniform patches. Maximum durability. Survives industrial washing indefinitely. Required for police, fire, military, and EMS uniform applications. Never use iron-on for these applications.
- Velcro (hook side on patch): For tactical gear, gear bags, helmets, and interchangeable patch systems. The loop side is sewn or built into the gear. Patch attaches and detaches easily. Good grip for 3–5 years before velcro needs replacement.
- Iron-on: Not recommended for any first responder application. Iron-on adhesive does not survive repeated industrial washing or heavy field use. We will advise against iron-on for official department orders.
Ordering Process for Agencies
We understand that agency ordering has specific requirements: purchase orders, approval processes, bulk quantities, and tight timelines. Here’s how we handle department orders:
- Submit your design or existing patch. A high-resolution scan of your current patch, your department seal in vector format, or official artwork. We work with whatever you have.
- Receive a digital mockup. We digitize your design and send a digital mockup showing exactly how it will stitch. Typically within 2–3 business days.
- Approve the mockup. Review for accuracy — insignia, colors, text, shape. Request changes until it’s exactly right. No production until you sign off.
- Physical sample. For new designs or large orders, we stitch a physical sample and send photos before bulk production. This is free — most suppliers charge for this.
- Bulk production. We produce your full order in-house at our Wilmington, Delaware facility. Standard turnaround 14 business days. Rush options available.
- Delivery. Shipped nationwide. We work with department purchasing timelines and can accommodate phased delivery for large orders.
