Custom Patch Size Guide
Choosing the right size for your custom patch matters — too small and the details get lost, too big and it overwhelms the garment. This guide covers the most common patch sizes, what each size works best for, and where patches are typically placed on uniforms, jackets, hats, bags, and vests. Whether you’re ordering embroidered patches, PVC patches, chenille patches, or any other type, the sizing principles are the same. Not sure what size you need? Common Patch Sizes & What They're Best For
1″ – 2″ (Small) — Ideal for hat patches, lapel placement, small logos, and name patches. Works well for simple designs with limited detail — initials, small icons, or short text. Popular for military morale patches, flag patches, and rank tabs.
2.5″ – 3.5″ (Medium) — The most popular size range. Large enough to show detailed logos, text, and multicolor designs while fitting comfortably on sleeves, chests, and caps. This is the standard size for most police department patches, fire department patches, scout patches, and sports team patches.
8-12″ (Large) — Best for hoodie fronts (upper), full chest designs, and detailed artwork with lots of elements. Common for martial arts dojo patches, large unit patches, clothing brands and club patches that need to be readable from a distance.
13-14″ (Extra Large) — Reserved for jacket back patches, biker vest patches, and large display pieces. These patches make a bold statement and are typically the centerpiece of the garment.
How to Choose the Right Patch Size
The right patch size depends on three things: where it’s going, how detailed the design is, and how visible it needs to be.
Match size to placement. A 2″ patch works on a hat but gets lost on a jacket back. A 10″ patch looks great on a biker vest but overwhelms a polo shirt. Start with where the patch will be worn and let that drive the size.
Match size to design complexity. Simple designs (initials, basic shapes, short text) work at any size. Detailed designs with fine lines, small text, or many colors need more space — a 3″ minimum is a good rule for logos with detail.
Match size to viewing distance. Patches meant to be read from across a room (team jerseys, event patches) need to be larger. Patches meant for close-up identification (name tapes, rank patches) can be smaller.
