A layer of foam is placed on the garment underneath the design area, then the embroidery machine stitches directly over it. The stitching compresses and shapes the foam into the raised, sculpted form of your design — creating genuine physical depth, not a printed illusion of one.

Bold, simple shapes with thick strokes hold up well — block lettering, simple logos, and wordmarks are the classic use case. Fine detail, thin lines, and small text don’t work: the foam needs enough room underneath the stitching to hold its shape, so anything too small or too delicate ends up looking flat or collapsed rather than raised.
There’s also a practical stitch-length limit — very long, unbroken stitch runs across a wide area can cause thread breaks under the tension the foam creates, so oversized solid areas need to be broken up rather than stitched as one continuous piece. This is why 3D puff works best on bold, well-separated design elements rather than dense, detailed artwork.
Many designs successfully combine both: the main logo or wordmark in 3D puff for impact, with smaller supporting text or detail stitched flat alongside it.
