Transfer tape embroidery gives you the look of a design embroidered directly onto your garment — no visible patch border, no fabric background, just the stitched design itself. It’s a genuinely different technique from a standard patch, and it comes with real design considerations worth understanding before you order.
How It's Made:
We embroider your design on fabric, then cut the fabric away around each individual piece of the design using a hot knife — leaving only the stitched elements themselves, with no background fabric holding them together. Since there’s nothing left to keep the pieces in position, we place them into a mold and transfer them onto a transfer tape, which holds every piece exactly where it belongs. You apply the design by removing the white release layer from the tape, positioning it on your garment, and heat pressing it — once the tape is removed, the design sits directly on the fabric with no visible patch background, as though it were embroidered onto the garment itself.
What Works — and What Doesn't
This technique works best with simple designs with larger, well-separated pieces — text-based designs, typically 8″ or larger, are the most reliable candidates. Larger pieces stay firmly attached to the transfer tape and won’t shift or come loose during shipping. Complex designs with very small, delicate details — like tiny star shapes under about 1cm — generally don’t hold up, since pieces that small can’t stay reliably secured to the tape. If your design has fine, intricate detail, a standard embroidered patch will give you a more reliable result.
Application
Transfer tape embroidery is iron-on only — there’s no fabric background to attach a sew-on or velcro backing to. Application is heat-press based: position the design, apply heat, then peel away the transfer tape once it’s bonded.
