The short version: embroidered patches give you texture and a traditional look, woven patches give you fine detail at a lower cost. But the real answer depends on what’s actually in your design — specifically, how much text and detail you’re trying to fit into a small space.
The Real Test: How Much Detail Does Your Design Have?
On a standard 2″ patch, embroidery handles simple text just fine — even cursive or thin fonts work if you’re keeping it to roughly 10-12 letters. The problem starts when a design has a lot of content packed into a small patch. Past a certain point, embroidery thread is simply too thick to keep small text legible — you can technically stitch it, but it won’t read clearly once it’s finished.
This is one of the most common issues we see: a customer brings a design — often mocked up with AI tools — with dense detail or small text and asks for it in chenille or another thick-thread material. Chenille in particular is built for large letters, numbers, or bold shapes; it struggles with anything fine. We’ll always tell a customer upfront if their design won’t translate well to their requested patch type. If they still want to proceed, we’ll make it — but the result is usually messier and harder to read than expected once the small details get lost in thick thread.
Woven patches solve this problem. The threads are finer, so a woven patch can hold text and detail that would blur or disappear in embroidery. If your design has more than a short line of text, small logos, or intricate linework, woven is the safer choice.
Pricing: Woven Is Generally Cheaper at Volume
Woven patches are typically less expensive than embroidered patches at the same size, and the gap grows at higher quantities. Even though we don’t require a minimum order on either type, larger quantities bring the per-piece price down significantly — and woven tends to scale down in price a bit faster than embroidered as quantity increases.
Border Options
Both embroidered and woven patches support merrow border (the classic stitched edge) and laser-cut border. Neither type is restricted here — the choice comes down to the look you want, not a limitation of the material.
Durability
Both embroidered and woven patches are built to last — realistically, the patch will outlive the garment it’s sewn onto. Neither fades or breaks down over time the way a printed or sublimated patch eventually can, since dye-based prints lose some vibrancy after repeated washing and sun exposure. If long-term durability matters more than fine detail, both embroidered and woven are solid choices — the decision comes down to design complexity and budget, not longevity.
